What is Air Vessel
Air vessels are closed containers with compressed air in the top half and water in the lower half. To prevent separation, these air pipes are placed close to the suction and delivery valve.
In order to smooth out pressure differences during discharge, an air vessel is typically installed in the discharge pipe.
The air in the vessel is squeezed as the discharge pressure increases.
Air expands in a same manner when pressure decreases.
Thus, when pressure rises, the peak pressure energy is stored in the air and released back into the system.
On reciprocating boiler feed pumps, air vessels are not placed since they could add air to the de-aerated water.
